The Artist: Michael Sucoff
My passion for metalwork started as a hobby that turned into a profession. In 1972, my wife and I moved into a new house with a two-story entry lobby. It was in desperate need of a piece of art to be finished. The only thing we saw that seemed appropriate for the space cost $1,000, which was totally out of our price range.
My company was building a truck terminal at the time, and we had some leftover pieces of 12-inch pipe used to protect the doorways. I made rings out of these cuts and welded them together to make my first piece, the "Perfect Woman." Since we owned a set of torches, I learned to weld nails and small amounts of metal into pleasing sculpture pieces.
